I’m a 20 something hobbyist webperson and professional femslash writer. I have an advanced degree in loving female characters and I never shut up about it.

This website is my home on the web. I’ve had many other web-homes, but this one is special because it is hosted on a server in my bedroom. So: home squared! I got into self hosting software in August 2024 but really only made progress with it about an entire year later. I really love doing things with computers.

I also love to write! I have been a writer my whole life, pretty much. I have to create things or I begin to wither away. I love writing short stories, creative nonfiction, poetry, interactive fiction, and of course, toxic yuri fic.

I’m very fannish and I’ve been in fandom for… 13 years as of 2025? My fannish interests generally center around science fiction, aliens and monsters, female characters, minor and underappreciated characters, and sometimes taboo relationships. My main fandoms are Babylon 5, The Orville, and Doom Patrol, but you can view more to the right.

A little bit ago, it was common on certain social media communities to do "personal bingos"---you'd fill out a bingo card, putting in each square a little about yourself. For example, your favorite things, aspects of your identity, life experiences, opinions…. why don't I just show you mine so you can see what I mean…?

I've always loved this idea, and that's definitely not because of my obsessive love for bingo-themed internet games in general, definitely not, no ma'am. You'd post your card, and people would reply with everything on the card that also applies to them by putting a stamp or dot on each space that applies---kinda like playing bingo. Then, they would make a card, and you'd do the same thing for theirs, replying and dotting everything about them that resonated with you.

This is a little bit like that. It's the first of three sessions so far. The other side of my head will have this image mirrored, the rest of my head will have bugs and beetles, and the colors will be rainbow across the head. (I already had the leopard print on the side of the face.)

I'm really surprised at how much it DIDN'T hurt, tbh. I watched an episode of Charmed (2018) during it lmao. It was my least painful tattoo, I'd say it was about... 4.5 out of 10? My chest and wrist hurt WAYYY more, the most painful part of it was lying down on a tiny tattoo table for like 5 hours, lmao. My artist was shocked and said he had never seen anyone take a head tattoo that well. It also isn't sore at all; I fell asleep on that side when I got home and it feels fine. I touch it and it feels fine. I'm starting to think I have no nerves on my head :p

Anyway... what else? Hm. I bought wigs from Arda Wings --- pink and green (my favorite color scheme if you couldn't tell). I've always wanted hair long enough to braid so this will be fun, plus I can just detach it whenever I want to like a fashion doll or something.

I'm getting pretty tired of being tired, tbh. I keep having SUCH a fucked up sleep schedule and it's making me go a little insanecrazy. It's just that being awake at night is the only time I ever feel truly "safe", because growing up it was only safe when certain people were asleep and now I cannot stop subconsciously associating late late nights with safety, and that person has been dead for... 8 years on the eighteenth, actually. Thank God.

But it makes me feel so isolated from everyone else, when I can't spend time with my loved ones, because I'm asleep all the time..
|
||||
|
||||
Oooh!! I developed a new feature for otwarchive; status updates! Someone else can probably code it way better than me (e.g. the css sucks, it doesn't use partials, etc.), but I'm so so genuinely PROUD of myself. I did it like 2 days after making my Ruby on Rails blog. (If you want a live example, you can check it out at [[https://symphony.anteater.monster/users/agnes|Symphony]]). There's also a basic timeline view. I'm putting it on Sunset around the 14th or so. I really hope it doesn't cause controversy....

I've been doing a lot of techy stuff lately!

I [[https://sillywordz.kissing.computer|forked the code behind status cafe and made it into a word count updater widget]] (which was SO HARD!!! I HATE GO!!). I [[http://cheesy.alien.town/|self-hosted a food microblogging site]] using [[https://moku.blog/|mokublog]], which is software I've absolutely fallen in love with. I started fucking around in Godot and am trying to make some writing software with it.

Ironically, many of these things I just mentioned involve writing, which is funny because I haven't been able to write anything in ages. I Forgor How To Write. Because of this fixation on web development and self-hosting, I FORGOR how to be creative in the literary and digital art ways. I don't know--is that an over-exaggeration? All of my tech stuff revolves around writing too. I mean, I got into this hobby in the first place hosting the code for a fanfiction site!! But this hyperfixation I have on self-hosting means ALL of my mental energy goes to either a) doing the hobby or b) thinking about the hobby.

||||
|
||||
I did write one thing for a fandom exchange, but I'm not super proud of it. Oh well. I will try to edit it later if I can. I hope the recipient likes it. And even that felt like pulling teeth (and not in the sexy way).
|
||||
|
||||
I know this is just temporary. I've felt like this a lot before and I always get my vibe back eventually. But man, if I don't find a way to diversify my focus soon, I'm gonna be in trouble. I miss writing. It's my main hobby. It's my everything. I am nothing if I cannot write.
|
||||
|
||||
But I'm GOOD at web stuff, turns out. And when I find a hobby I'm good at, especially one that allows me to create and develop communities (like Sunset) or cool accomplishments (like Sillywordz and the OTWArchive status updates feature), I go all in. I go insane. I feel insane.
|
||||
|
||||
It's taking up all of my time. I've been more productive in the past 2 months than I have been in the past 2 years. I wish I could be productive on more things than just this.
|
||||
|
||||
At the same time, I finally feel like I have accomplishments. People I was friends with as a kid over the internet? Now famous actors. Went to Brown. Are teaching poetry and have a PHD in english. Getting robotics grants. Me? I have... self-hosted ao3 twice and added status updates to it! And that's notable because this software is notoriously hard to wrangle, and I learned RoR in a day! No, still not the same, actually. But it makes me feel like I'm getting there. Like I'm on the road to being a person. It's stupid, I know.

I want so desperately to go to college in January. I'm signed up! But man. I just. I don't think I'll be able to. I don't know if I'll ever be able to go to college. That's another reason I've been so focused on web stuff - I have way, way too much time on my hands being housebound + no school + no work, and web stuff is both rewarding and it fills my day up with Stuff to Do so I Don't Get Bored And Go Insane. I don't always have the inspiration to write, but tech engages a different, more accessible part of my brain. So I end up here.

|
||||
Anyway... one of the reasons I need to figure out how to write again is that I'm signed up for several exchanges at the moment, including Five Figure Fanworks, which has a minimum of 10k. And see, my assignment for FFFEX, I am SO excited for! It's perfect for me, it's every fiber of wood in my wheelhouse! I have so many ideas! And yet I can't make the words come out.

Things have been weird lately. I have to drop my trauma therapist because I realized she isn't helping me, doesn't care, and doesn't even really like me. I really don't like the fact that I have to do that. I keep dissociating SO badly, every damn day!! I'm never just me. I can never just be Agnes.
|

I sound more depressed than I actually am tbh. I'm really happy these days despite all of this. My loved ones make me so happy and I'm so grateful for them. I just wish I could be more functional.

ON FANDOM EXCHANGE NORMS

||||
|
||||
I haven't been doing fanwork exchanges for very long. I did my first this January, Candy Hearts Exchange, and then immediately launched into High Adrenaline Exchange (the one where you have two weeks to write 10 thousand words). I have, since then, apparently made the missteps of:
|

|
||||
-Including a reason for why I defaulted in an email (my tablet pen broke)
|
||||
|
||||
-asking dumb questions/having memory issues about rules
|
||||
|
||||
Exchange norms in fandom spaces are. Interesting. Now, let me say this: I am completely, 100% of the opinion that most people in exchange spaces mean well and just want everybody to have a good time. But Bangs, Fests, and Exchanges (as it is called on the anonymous fan forum Fail Fandom Anon) is big (2k members in the main discord server for the topic, I believe), and there are bound to be issues in any big space. Most of them arise from people unaware of unspoken exchange norms/etiquette. Recently in the the topic of unspoken exchange norms came up in aforementioned discord server, and it got me thinking about how there's no big write-up of fandom exchange norms for people new to the exchange scene —- something I massively would've benefitted from in my early days. I thought about doing one, but I came across some issues in the process of actually planning this out.

|
||||
First, like I said, I've only been doing exchanges for a very short period of time. When I first got into exchanges, I had a massive hyperfixation on them, where they were all I thought about every single day. I ate, slept, breathed exchanges and did as many as I possibly could, pre-planned nominations and 3k-word-long letters months before exchanges began, and a lot of other subjectively-unhinged behavior surrounding exchanges. But this still does not compare to someone who has been hanging out in BFE spaces for multiple years. How much did I really know?

|
||||
And then I realized: yes, BFE spaces are big, like I said before. Exchange spaces are massive, and there are multiple subpockets of the multifandom exchange scene, too—-apparently Minecraft Youtube fandom had its own giant Battleship exchange recently—-so how could I possibly come up with a guide to all of it? It would be impossible to write up a comprehensive guide that would help every single person, which was the original vision I had.

||||
I realized that if I wanted to go through with this project, I would have to make it clear that it's not comprehensive and is highly subjective because it is based on my own personal experiences and mindset. It is not entirely based on that - like, I'm not just making this stuff up based on nothing; it would incorporate all my months of experience in BFE spaces as well as (many, many) conversations I've had with seasoned BFE participants about exchange conduct, etiquette, and norms - but it still would be, you know, one person's passion project. But I thought that might still be doable, you know?

|
||||
Here are some terms it might help you to know when going through exchange spaces.
|
||||
|
||||
anon, anon period: Most exchanges require works to be anonymous for a certain period of time, beginning at the moment of which you receive your assignment to the end of the anon period/start of the creator reveals phase. The exchange interface will automatically do this for you. This means that until the creator reveals phase, you cannot discuss who your recipient is or what you're writing for them in a public space.
|

|
||||
beta: someone who reads over your work before you post it to check for spelling and grammar errors, and sometimes characterization, etc.
|
||||
|
||||
recipient, recip: Who you're assigned to write for.
|
||||
|
||||
deanoning: since 99.9% of exchanges have an anon period (see above), discussing your works, offers, or recipient in a public space is referred to as deanoning, and is very, very frowned upon, as anonyminity is most of the time central to exchange functionality.
|
||||
|
||||
noms, nominations: Refers to the nomination phase, which is when we add fandoms, ships, characters, and freeform tags to a tagset that will be the basis of the exchange. Think of it like a database - the requests you make in an exchange can take any tag from this database, but most of the time, it does not take tags from outside of this specific database (tagset), so in order to request something in an exchange, you must nominate the tag into the tagset. I go into how you do this later. (Hint: many exchanges are themed, meaning they will only accept nominations of a certain eligibility. Be sure to check!)

|
||||
disambiguating: generally, when nominating things, most exchanges require you to disambiguate your nominations. This typically means adding the fandom they're from in parentheses after the ship/character/applicable freeform tag. Some examples: Heinz Doofenshmirtz (Phineas & Ferb), Phineas Flynn/Isabella Garcia-Shapiro (Phineas & Ferb), Worldbuilding: O.W.C.A Recruitment (Phineas & Ferb), Waterbending (AtLA).
|
||||
|
||||
nominations query: When nominating, sometimes the exchange mods will need to ask questions about certain nominations, or inform the nominators of some issue with their submission. Since nominations are always anonymous, they typically do this via a Dreamwidth (or whatever social media they run the info off of) post called a Nom Query post.
|
||||
|
||||
signups: The period in which you can sign up to the exchange.
|
||||
|
||||
requests: The things you want to receive in an exchange. You input these requests on the first part of the signup form, which will usually be customized to the specifics of each exchange. You can request pretty much anything, as long as it is in the tagset and relevant to the exchange theme (if applicable). Some exchanges have a fandom minimum, which means you must request a certain amount of unique fandoms to be garuanteed a gift. Some will not require you to request multiple fandoms and will allow a single fandom signup, and sometimes exchanges will withhold gift gaurantees from single fandom signups. The ao3 interface allows a maximum of ten requests.

|
||||
DNW: Stands for "do not wants"—a list of things you do not want to receive in a gift that your creator must 100% avoid including.
|
||||
|
||||
DNM: do not match request. A request made to the mods of an exchange typically by email that you do not match with a certain participant(s). You never have to include a reason, and most mods will prefer that you don't include a reason. All good mods take every DNM request seriously. You can do this for any reason. Many mods will ask what you wish them to do if your DNM request tries to treat you or pick up your pinch hit (e.g. tell them you've DNMed them). Not all exchanges allow these.
|
||||
|
||||
matching: Exchanges match you with a recipient based on your offers. You are matched to a gifter based on your requests.
|
||||
|
||||
unmatchable: This means no one wants what you're offering. Mods will typically contact you via the email you signed up to Ao3 for and ask if you want to add any offers. They typically have a limited response period before they move on and send out assignments (commonly 12 or 24 hours), so be sure to check the email you signed up for frequently.
|
||||
|
||||
pinch hits, PH: If you are sent for an initial pinch hit, this means no one offered what you requested. Do not fear, someone will pick your pinch hit up eventually! People very fequently pick up new fandoms for exchange PHs. This is neutral. When your pinch hit is claimed, it means someone has offered to write your pinch hit! To claim a pinch hit, you typically comment on a Dreamwidth post (comments are screened in these cases, so only the mods can see them) with your ao3 name and email address, OR you email them with the same information. Post-deadline pinch hits are pinch hits that have come out after the assignment due date, and the exchange will not typically reveal gifts until all pinch hits have been turned in. They are given their own due dates. Emergency pinch hits typically mean (I think) the gift did not fulfill an exchange requirement for whatever reason (common ones: gift included a DNW, was spitefic, did not include requested character/ship/freeform, was below minimum, was incomplete, was deleted, did not fit exchange theme enough).

|
||||
minimum: The minimum amount of words required for your gift. For example, a 500 word minimum means your gift must be 500 words or more. Art minimums vary, but common ones are that it must be of a quality and effort level you'd be happy to receive as a gift yourself. Other medium minimums (what a tongue twister!) vary as well. High minimum exchanges are exchanges that typically have minimums of 5 thousand or 10 thousand words. Low minimum exchanges typically refer to exchanges with minimums under 1000 words, but especially ones with a minimum of 300-500 words. Maximums are not common but do happen sometimes, like with drabble exchanges.

|
||||
permissions statement: A statement in your profile that says what people can or cannot do with your work. For example: "You may podfic or create fanart as long as you link back to me", "Do not redistribute", "Do not feed to generative AI".
|
||||
|
||||
recursive fandom: Fanworks of fanworks. Like writing a fic about a fic or original fannish piece you or someone else wrote.
|
||||
|
||||
offers: what you are willing to write as a gift for someone else in the exchange you're participating in. These are secret! You can view how many people have signed up to offer a specific fandom, but you cannot view specifically who. In addition, discussing what you plan to offer is typically considered de-anoning.
|
||||
|
||||
assignment, mint: The request that you are assigned to write! You will be assigned a request based on your offers. You can write anything your requester has asked for, even if you matched on only one request.
|
||||
|
||||
reveals, collection opens: This is when gifts are revealed! Before this point, gifts are unviewable. This means you cannot read them or see who wrote them until the collection opens and reveals are done.
|
||||
|
||||
gift shaking: You can, however, see WHAT YOUR GIFT CONTAINS. Sort of. An overview. This can be done one of two ways: on the gift page via a userscript, or by going to fandoms on the collection page, scrolling down until you find one of the fandoms you requested, and looking at the filters tab under fandom, relationship, character, or additional tag. The second method will not work if you have requested fandoms that have multiple works for them in the collection. Neither method will work if the exchange is moderated and your gift has not been accepted into the collection yet.
|
||||
|
||||
treat, treating, treated, extra gift: Gifts made for you by someone who was not assigned as your main gifter. You cannot tell what is the main assignment and what is a treat unless the author has indicated it is a treat on the work page.
|
||||
|
||||
gift guarantee: If an exchange has a gift guarantee, it means that if you do not have a gift in the collection by the time of reveals, reveals will be delayed until you are assigned a pinch hitter. Treats often do not count for gift guarantees; you typically must have an Officially Assigned Gifter before reveals can be done, even if someone has already treated you.

|
||||
EAD, exchanges after dark: The "main" and largest exchange Discord server.
|
||||
|
||||
creator reveals: The end of the anon period. You can say the work you posted is yours now! Yay!
|
||||
|
||||
AO3 app: an external website, https://autoao3app.fandom.tools/#/, that allows you to easily search for, bookmark and sort through exchange and prompt meme requests.
|
||||
|
||||
prompt meme: A different kind of collection challenge where you leave prompts and people can claim them. We won't be going into this much.
|
||||
|
||||
podfic: An audio-only medium in which an actor or podficcer records themselves reading a fic out loud.
|
||||
|
||||
mediums: The medium in which you can create a gift. Different exchanges have different allowed mediums. https://ficinabox.dreamwidth.org/ Fic in a Box, for example, allows an insane amount of mediums. Fic is the default in most cases, but art, comics, and podfic are commonly included as well.
|
||||
|
||||
defaulting: If you cannot complete your assignment FOR ANY REASON, you hit the default button on the AO3 interface. **You do not have to explain why you default and mods prefer that you do not explain.** Assignments that are defaulted on will be sent out for pinch hits. Some exchanges have a deadline where, if you default by that time, you must complete a gift or request in order to participate in the next round, but this is not that common.
|
||||
|
||||
extension: If you need an extension (extra time to complete an assignment), you may ask the mods for an extension (via email or comment-screened Dreamwidth post), but not all exchanges grant them. Read the rules first before requesting.
|
||||
|
||||
FFA, fail fandom anon: a Dreamwidth community where anonymous discussions are had about fandom, and which BFE participants commonly frequent and create threads for. It's anonymous, so.. you can imagine the kind of things that go on there.
|
||||
|
||||
Dreamwidth: an online journaling service and Livejournal code fork that is where information for many exchanges are hosted.
|
||||
|
||||
letter: a letter of likes, interests, thoughts on requests, etc that you can include in your signup to allow your gifter to get a better idea of what you'd like in a gift. Commonly hosted on Dreamwidth Tumblr or Google docs, but I like to use notion.
|
||||
Etiquette
|
||||
|
||||
Never harass another participant, especially over their interests. This is a good way to get yourself banned and hated on in FFA.
|
||||
|
||||
ODAO, meaning Optional Details are Optional—-your recipient may include a list of things they like, or a letter, but these are optional and as a creator you are not bound by them. You are only required to not include any of their DNWs.
|
||||
|
||||
Additionally, as a requester, do not attempt to "box in" or force your creator to make a specific kind of work by utilizing your DNWs (e.g. no DNW that's, like, "DNW fics where Perry the Platypus isn't carrying Doof's hybrid babies").
|
||||
|
||||
When you need a clarification on a recipient's DNW or likes or something, you must ask through the mods via email. They will contact your recipient for you. You cannot contact the recipient directly, unless it is an exchange with no anon period. This is deanoning and Bad.
|
||||
|
||||
Kinkshaming is never cool; see first entry. Also referred to as KINKTOMATO/YKINMKATO (Your Kink Is Not My Kink And That's Okay).
|
||||
|
||||
Don't Like, Don't Read. Simple as.
|
||||
|
||||
Never say something in your signup like, "This is ordered by which fandoms I'd like to receive most!" When you signup you are open to receiving anything in your signup equally. If you don't want something, don't request it.
|
||||
|
||||
Never say something in your DNW section like, "DNW: Phineas/Ferb (eww!!)" or "DNW: Hanahaki (ugh i HATE that trope)" or "DNW: piss kink (ew who could ever be into that LOL)". Basically, don't judge. Actually, don't explain why you DNW something at all.
|
||||
|
||||
Typically most exchanges ask that you ask questions about the exchange on Dreamwidth or email, and not over Discord.
|
||||
|
||||
Don't, like, trauma dump to mods, and don't lie to them. They receive a lot of weird emails, don't be that guy.
|
||||
|
||||
Don't get in over your head or overwhelmed by signing up for too many exchanges.
|
||||
|
||||
NEVER sign up for an exchange with the intention of defaulting so you get a gift without making something. Ever. If you default later, that's fine, but doing so with this deliberate intention is another good way to get banned.
|
||||
|
||||
Don't try to pick up a PH for the same exchange if you've already defaulted on your original assignment. This is one I learned recently.
|
||||
|
||||
If nominating a recursive fandom, you should check that the creator of the piece allows recursive works in their permissions statement.
|
||||
|
||||
Don't use generative AI. Ever. Also don't trace or steal art.
|
||||
|
||||
And most importantly: READ THE RULES. READ THEM FIRST. READ THE RULES THEN READ THEM AGAIN. THEN READ THEM ONE MORE TIME.
|
||||
|
||||
That's all I can think of for now. I was also going to include a technical guide to using the interface but I fear I am too lazy.

||||
Anyway, as you can see, exchange norms are pretty complex, and I've DEFINTIELY forgotten a few things, too! But I hope this helps someone out there. And hey, happy Blaugust!

A lot of people will say that cockatoos have the intelligence of a four or five year old `human child. And as a new parront (parrot parent), I have to say that this is 100% true. I mean, I didn’t look up the studies or anything, but I feel that it is true in my soul. My bird is an eternal toddler. She is a toddler with a chainsaw on her face and the ability to induce migraines with her voice who will never grow up. And she will live for like sixty years. And I adore her to bits.

Saira has been with us a week to this day, and every moment I spend with her is enriching and beautiful and fun. Even during the screeching! Even during the pellet flinging and accidental floor pooping! And especially during cage escaping crimes!!!!!!!
|

A lot of people will also tell you not to get a cockatoo if you’re thinking of getting one. Before I got Saira, I thought that was very harsh. But now…
|
||||
|
||||
Most people don’t have the amount of time to spare that they require, you know? Saira wants me literally every moment of every day. If I’m not there- or sometimes if I am there and just focused on Not Her - she screeches and flaps her wings. She shreds toys and bites jewelry. She pulled out my nose ring the first time we met. I love Saira, and I have to echo the sentiment.

It’s not that no one is ever able to care for one appropriately. It’s that you should be sure you’re prepared before you begin your feathery journey. In the right configuration, it can change your life.

For my whole life, I used to be so depressed I didn’t see a future for myself. I got properly medicated only recently, but that doesn’t cure depression, it only alleviates the suicidal ideation and clears up some of the distortions. You still have to pull yourself there on your own. You still have to find a reason for living.

|
||||
I think maybe taking care of Saira is my reason. This bird could outlive me. I need to be around and healthy in order to keep her safe. She is my reason for trying.

|
||||
Overall these days I am trying So Hard. I am trying in the world of socialization, and I'm even trying to do things IRL more when my chronically ill body allows me to (rare, unfortunately). I crave the outside world and connection and Someone To Talk To. Well, Saira says her name, says "Hi!", and says "wheeee!" I think that's a good start.

Having Saira in my life and having her be my main focus of all has given me the inspiration to focus on other things. Which sounds oxymoronic, probably, but it's… she brings me a joy I have been missing. The happiness she brings me is greater than the happiness my new meds gave me when I started them and they saved my life. With that happiness that Saira sparks, I'm able to have the energy to do the things that make me even happier. Hobbies like coding amd fucking around with computers and writing and teaching myself digital art. Fandom events. Other events. Conversations.

I've been focused on self-hosting quite a bit; I got another instance of otwarchive up, at {{https://symphony.anteater.monster/|Symphony}}, which is multifandom and for my friends/friends of friends. It's got a music-themed shtick, so hits are now plays, kudos is now applause, etc. I am planning to put all the fic I've ever written on there, which will take a While. and I'm hoping to self-host the DW code eventually. I run a Haven instance right now for pro-fiction stuff, but it's pretty dead, so I want to upgrade it. I am maybe a little bit too into computers, the hyperfixation is never-ending, lmao. I also want to learn Ruby, yes I know about the horrors but I want to do some new features that AO3 doesn't have and in order to do that I gotta learn shit. I love self-hosting, it's fun to work on and SO rewarding when you finally fix the errors and Make The Thing Run.

I'm a little scared right now because on a recent routine eye doctor visit, my pressures were rather high, and there were signs of some optic nerve damage. That combined with a big family history of glaucoma concerned my doctor and I'm trying to get into a specialist now to determine what's wrong. AND. I have a bad feeling about this. Like, yeah it's treatable when detected early, but I'm 24. Does it being early onset mean any difference for the course of the disease than it does for people who develop it with age? Do I even have it? I don't want to lose my sight, but it seems to be getting worse. I'm already antimetropic, I don't need any more weird eye conditions, thank you! I can't get into the ophthalmologist until March, and man, the anxiety is neverending. Every day my eye hurts. Help.

I've been playing LOTS of Palia recently and I fell in love with Elouisa all over again so I added her to my f/o list on here. It's getting pretty long and I'm thinking of making an extended version… I just love her, she reminds me so much of myself, AND her relationship with Caleri is literally gut-wrenching. Palia is so fun. I'm currently trying to get through Elouisa's second(???) third??? I can't remember, one of the friendship quests. It's hard because it's the one where you have to catch 5 rare fish and well… catching fish is the most difficult thing for me in this game. I just do not have the motor skills needed!!! Help!!! But it's so fun and addictive. I also love that they just added an animal husbandry skill. I've been naming my pekis (chickens) after Orville characters…

I've been having lots of nightmares lately because of my new blood pressure med. It seems like every night I go to sleep and after that I'm being hunted down. Sleep is one of my worst triggers, if not my worst :/ even WITHOUT nightmares, so it's been extra hard. But the med really helps, so…

I signed up for courses at my local community college for next Spring. I don't know if I'm actually going to do it but I wanted to be registered in case. I mean, it's... the goal. I'm working as hard as I possibly can to get to a point where I can handle school. And I hope that "a point where I can handle school" is a point I'm actually capable of reaching! I am so so so bored every single day of my life. I have nothing to do besides fandom exchanges and I watch everyone I grew up with move on to jobs and degrees and I just have... nothing to do that feels really meaningful. I love running Sunset I love self-hosting and trying to be a part of fandom and make it a better place,, but it's still just fandom lol.

This year, in late September/early October, I deployed an instance of the code behind Archive of our Own, the largest fanfiction site in the world; [[https://sunset.femslash.club/|Sunset!]]. It's been a wilddd ride, and not 100% fun, but I really enjoy running it. It's been amazing. I also deployed another instance of OTW-Archive called [[https://symphony.anteater.monster/|Symphony]], and that one is for friends <3

I got a face tattoo in July, and a full-scalp tattoo in November (well, in the process of getting it as I write this. I just had my first session.)
|
||||
|
||||
Generally, my focus right now has been self-hosting websites, creating new things for the websites I already self-host, and producing my own web apps. (I made a blog using Ruby on Rails, but Ruby on Rails is heavy software not meant for laptops with 12GB of memory, it turns out!) I developed a new feature for otwarchive: [[https://sunset.femslash.club/admin_posts/16|basic status updates!]] and that was my first "big" accomplishment with webdev. I really wish I had the resources to make projects from scratch on Ruby - it's the most intuitive software to me at the moment, since my first Linux experience was self-hosting OTW-Archive which is run on Ruby on Rails - but alas, I think that is outside the scope of my budget.

I've also been having fun with fandom exchanges. I started doing them this year in February. My first was the 300 word minimum Candy Hearts Exchange, and then I launched RIGHT into High Adrenaline, where you write 10k words in 2 weeks for someone else. I also had a super fun time with Battleship exchange this year!!
|
||||
|
||||
I've officially been doing esketamine treatment for a year and taking Auvelity since May (medications for treatment resistant depression that saved my life after 20 years of suicidal ideation) and the difference in my life is AMAZING. It's not perfect, but like, I'm 80% better than I used to be and I no longer feel suicidal ideation. I'm so so happy about that.

I got a bird! A goffin cockatoo. Her name is Saira. She was adopted out to us as a girl but as we learned more about cockatoos it became clear she's actually male, but by then she was already "she/her" to us and we didn't want to stop, so... gender nonconforming bird <3 I adore her, she's my precious baby.

Overall, I'm very happy with where my life is right now. I have amazing friends and loved ones, and I finally feel like I have accomplishments of my own. I can't wait to see what I do next.

Instructions

|
||||
- In a large pot with just enough water to cover them, boil potatoes with their skins on. The skin helps prevent the potato from absorbing access water. (Dry potatoes are good. Watery potatoes are bad.) Boil for about 20-30 minutes or until fork tender. Over-boiling will cause potatoes to become mushy and too wet.
|
||||
- Strain and peel the boiled potatoes, removing any brown spots that might be below the skin. Peel them quickly, as the cooler they get, the less fluffy they become. I held them in a tea towel to peel!
|
||||
- Spread most of the flour onto your work surface and using a potato ricer (in Italian passavedura) press the cooked potatoes into a mound onto the centre of the flour. If you don’t have a ricer you can mash the potatoes until smooth. Mix the flour and potato together.
|
||||
- Allow the potatoes to cool a little if they are still hot and then make a hollow in the centre of your potatoes and flour, add a pinch of salt and then pour in the lightly beaten egg. (If the potatoes are still too hot the egg will start to cook)
|
||||
- Start to blend and knead everything together with your hands, adding more flour as you go if you need to. Work carefully and quickly, as the more you handle the dough, the harder it will become. You need the same lightness you would use for pastry. Continue until the dough loses most of its stickiness and becomes more solid.
|
||||
- Cut a quarter of the dough off and cover the rest with a tea towel to prevent it drying out too quickly. Reflour your work surface. I used semolina flour (semola in Italian).
|
||||
- Divide the quarter into two and roll each piece out into a rope or snake about as thick as your thumb and cut it into pieces about 2cm wide. Repeat with the rest of the dough.
|
||||
- Gently roll each gnocco against the floured front tines of a fork or down an gnocchi board to make ridges. Then arrange in a single layer on prepared floured baking sheets. ( I used semolina flour for this).
|
||||
- Allow the gnocchi to rest for 20-30 minutes before cooking.
|
||||
- Potato gnocchi need to be cooked almost immediately, although you can keep them covered in the fridge or at room temperature for a couple of hours. However you have to keep them separated or they will stick together!
|
||||
- When you are ready to cook your gnocchi, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. In batches, add a few handfuls of gnocchi and cook until most have floated to top, about 2 minutes. With a wire-mesh spider or a slotted spoon, transfer the gnocchi immediately to whatever sauce you have prepared.

* ¾ cup ground maple sugar crystals or 1 cup sugar

||||
* 1 egg

||||
* 1 tsp maple extract

* 2 ¾ cups Pamela's Baking & Pancake Mix

||||
Frosting
|
||||
* 4 oz cream cheese, softened
|
||||
* 2 TBSP butter, softened
|
||||
* ½ tsp vanilla
|
||||
* ½ cup + 2 TBSP powdered sugar

||||
|
||||
Cream butter and maple sugar (or sugar) together, add egg and maple extract and beat to combine. Grate nutmeg and whisk together with Baking & Pancake Mix; add to butter mixture and blend until the dough holds together.

|
||||
Roll dough between two pieces of parchment paper to ¼" thick. Chill on cookie or sheet pan in refrigerator until dough is cold and stiff. Cut out cookie shapes, place on parchment covered cookie sheet, leaving space between the cookies to spread.
|
||||
|
||||
Bake at 350° for 8 to 12 minutes, edges should be light brown. Let cookies cool before using spatula to remove from pan to wire rack.
|

Cream ingredients together and frost completely cooled cookies.

Chefs Note: Cookies are crisp after baking and quite delicious plain or just with a sprinkle of sugar crystals. Once frosted, the cookies will soften over time from the frosting; overnight they will become quite soft, and lose all crispness.

|
||||
Without frosting, the nutmeg in these cookies is strong; using the full ½ tsp nutmeg will make the cookies similar to a nutmeg snap. Frosting will mellow out the nutmeg flavor, or reduce the nutmeg to ¼ tsp for more of a nuanced flavor.

This was my first venture into posting recipes, and it is A Mess. But... I still think this was pretty delicious! It's very much a "throw a bunch of shit I find in the kitchen together and see what happens" recipe though.

||||
Mashed Potato Crust:
|
||||

||||
* 4-6 Yukon Gold Potato
|
||||
* Spices: I used Tandoori, Garlic Salt, Balti, Berbere, Sweet Curry and Chili Powder.
|
||||
* Lemon Greek Yogurt - 1 1/2 Tbsp
|
||||
* 2 tbsp half/half
|
||||
* 1/2 stick butter
|
||||
* 2 squirts of Chili Garlic Cholula
|
||||
* Fresh basil, cut up into lil pieces

||||
* For the rest:

* 1 cup carrots, diced
|
||||
* 1 cup peas
|
||||
* alfredo sauce - whatever your desired amount is
|
||||
* More of aforementioned spices (I only used tandoori and berbere in the filling)

I first began by nearly setting the house on fire. Then I cut and boiled my potatoes. I didn't peel them because I am an idiot. Anyway. I then mashed them, adding the spices at first (the amount you add is really up to your soul but I went heavy on the garlic salt because I had no fresh garlic, and heavy on the tandoori and berbere as well because I love spice. I was more reserved with the balti, chili powder and sweet curry.)

I then added my butter and my half and half and got to mashing. I used some lemon greek yogurt to add a slight tang, citrusy sweet flavor, but regular lemon juice can also be used. I cut up fresh basil into very fine pieces. I mixed in a few shakes of chili garlic sauce. Then I spread this mixture over the bottom of a dish and set it aside.

I boiled my peas and carrots and then cut them all up, putting it into a batch of alfredo sauce seasoned with generous amounts of Tandoori and Berbere. How much alfredo sauce did I use? I don't know! Probably at least 75% of a jar. Does that mean anything to you? It doesn't to me. I don't do numbers. Amount of alfredo sauce is another thing to let your heart guide you on, buddy. Sorry.

Anyway I then poured this mixture over the potatoes and topped it with the rest of the potatoes, spooning it carefully over the top to create a sort of crust. Bake for about 17 min at 350.

I made this one night on a random idea whim, and it accidentally turned out amazing.

Ingredients:

* Frozen tater tots brand of your choice
|
||||
* 2oz cream cheese
|
||||
* 1 1/2 cup shredded Mexican cheese blend
|
||||
* 1/2 cup mozarella cheese
|
||||
* 1/2 jar alfredo sauce
|
||||
* 2 cups pasta - shells or macaroni
|
||||
* Chili powder
|
||||
* Garlic powder
|
||||
* 3 slices of muenster cheese
|
||||
|
||||
Spread frozen tater tots across the bottom of a medium-large dish. Spread cream cheese generously over the top. Set aside for now.
|
||||
|
||||
Cook pasta using directions on box.
|
||||
Dump cooked pasta over the tater tots and cream cheese. Mix in the cheese, alfredo sauce, and spices. Place cheese slices so that they cover the top of the ingredients.
|

Cook in the oven at 350 for half an hour.

* ½ cup diced cucumber
|
||||
* 2 tbsp cream cheese (or however much is needed to spread across tortilla of choice)
|

* 1 tortilla of choice (i use mission gluten free)
|
||||
* ¼ large avocado, sliced
|
||||
* ¼ cup of mixed kale and spinach
|
||||
* ¼ cup finely diced tomatoes
|
||||
* sea salt
|
||||
|
||||
Take tortilla and spread it out. Spread cream cheese across tortilla. Splay kale and spinach over cream cheese. Add avocado slices, then add diced cucumber and tomatoes. Sprinkle sea salt over the top. Roll tightly. Wrap in plastic wrap or tinfoil and refrigerate for at least 45 min. When time has passed, remove plastic wrap. Cut into 1 inch pieces and secure pinwheel curls with toothpicks, and serve.

Ingredients:

* 3 potatoes, I used Yukon Gold, cut into wedges
|
||||
* 2 lemons, juice freshly squeezed
|
||||
* 2-3 Garlic cloves, minced
|
||||
* 1 tbsp dried Oregano
|
||||
* 1 tsp sea salt
|
||||
* 1 tbsp minced fresh parsley
|
||||
* ¾ cup extra virgin olive oil
|
||||
* 1 tsp black pepper
|
||||
* 1sp lemon zest
|
||||
* ¾ cup broth (veggie or chicken; I used chicken)

Cut your potatoes into medium-sized wedges. In a small bowl, create your seasoning mixture with the oregano, sea salt, parsley, black pepper, and minced garlic mixture. Zest the lemon peel over the potatoes, then juice lemons and orange into a bowl. In that bowl, mix the olive oil, lemon juice, orange juice, and broth, then cover the potatoes with this mixture.

Many recipes call for this to be roasted for about an hour and a half, but this is my version of the potatoes that are used as a side dish, so I roasted them for about one hour and ten minutes and it worked fine. Roast at 375.

I've been in love with them (I use xe/they for the negative spirit exclusively) since before I even knew what being fictoromantic really was!! At first I thought it was just a self ship, but my feelings were so, so real. I didn't really begin to realize I was fictoromantic until people pointed out to me that I was more passionate about the negative spirit than any other aspect of my life, and I only started identifying as ficto in fall 2024. However, I do consider myself to have been married to them since 2019 - for 6 years as of the time I'm writing this. The first time I saw them on screen, I was fascinated, and by the end of episode 1, I was obsessed. I've never had such a strong attraction to a character before; it transcended feelings and transcended the fictional realm.

I've been told it's silly to love them so much, because xe is a very minor character, but... To me that makes our bond even more special. I can't say for certain, and I don't mean to step on any toes if there are other tns fans out there, but as far as im aware, im probably the only one who has ever paid this much attention to them, and I'm probably the only one who has ever truly loved them in a wholly positive way. They try to be a hero in the show, but they struggle to do so because of their emotional volatility. Vic understands their nature, and Larry clearly cares for them in the later seasons, but.. No one in the show LOVES them outwardly, and especially not in a way that lacks all destruction.

I feel like what most people don't understand about them is that they really do care about the things around them, they just don't understand how to deal with the strength of their emotion + the strong emotions of larry that they are forced to feel in addition to their own. Niles says that the spirit is powerful, but sensitive; that's another thing that I love about them!! They're in this weird stasis of being close in proximity to humanity, being emotional like humanity... And yet they're so far away from being human in every sense. It makes me ache to think about the loneliness they must feel after being torn from their home dimension and placed into a world of such suffering. It makes me ache to think about the intentional and unintentional torture inflicted upon them over their sixty years on earth. And I do not at all fault them for leaving; they saw future larry be happy with his son in 1996. How could they stay and selfishly deprive larry of that happiness? The scant queen says they want to stay. They just can't, because they care enough not to erase the timeline that gives larry a second chance at fatherhood. But enough character analysis.

1) Their sensitivity. Now, this may be an odd one? But they experience emotion in an extremely intense way, and so do I. It feels like we are a match made in heaven. I can really understand how they get affected by everything so deeply, and the fact that they feel things like that, in my mind, makes them one of the most genuine characters on the show. They don't mask it, they don't pretend otherwise; it comes out in some pretty gnarly ways, but hey, that's life, you know? Niles: "It's a lot more sensitive and powerful than you may think"

2) Their heroics! Like, they don't HAVE to help everyone? They help the Patrol get out of the Donkey Dimension (this show is weird), they help cliff and jane come back from Jane's mind, they help trap mr nobody in the painting.......... and they were forced to be on this planet. they have only known harm and hatred while on Earth. and yet, they help and try to be a hero. and yes, sometimes it backfires, but the intent of good is there. Larry: "you wanna be a hero? go be a hero. i wanna see the sunset."

3) How much they care for Larry. They are in a parasite-host Venom type thing, but Larry hates them for most of the show (it's REALLY complicated) and yes, while they do react with anger back, it is only because he won't accept them - and when he does, they soften!! They care so much for Larry, they helped him get in touch with his old lover, they helped him accept himself, they gave him a second chance at fatherhood. I find it so sweet and admirable, especially when things get better for them later on in season 1.

4) They are just so beautiful. Is this a superficial one?? NO!!! Because!! Look at them. plus, everyone else calls them ugly but I think their blue shine and sparkle and shimmer and spark is so pretty. I see the beauty in them when others don't. I don't want them to take on a human form in the mind, I love THEM, their real self, their real form, their real body-or-lack-there-of. I also imagine they feel tingly to the touch, and that they really love touch.

5) When it comes down to it, they do the right thing, not necessarily the kind or sweet thing. They let Elliot free when he was a danger to himself knowing he would cause the destruction of earth because it was either his life or the rest of the world's safety, and also because everyone should have the right to bodily autonomy. They let Larry go because they saw in the past how happy he would be once he coped with losing them and though they wanted to stay (Dumb Patrol: "Your biggest mistake is thinking you can stay") they knew they couldn't, because he'd never truly be happy with them there.

||||
6) I love how alien they are and how different from humanity they are. I love how they don't understand why Larry hates himself because of how Earth-society-centric his struggles are, and I love how everything they do seems to be a little left of humanity, and yet simultaneously more human than a lot of humans are.

7) I love their anger and their rage. I love how they have been through so much hell and torture and still help others, but they also have a deep rage that cannot be extinguished, not really, at all the things Niles put them through. They allow themselves to feel even the ugly feelings, and they do not succumb to toxic positivity. Hot take but I don't even think they're that negative, I just think they had a uniquely shitty experience on Earth and are reacting to it like any trauma survivor would.
